(makes about 8 to 8.5 ounces or about 245 grams)
Ingredients:
120 grams shea butter
60 grams cupuacu (or cocoa) butter
40 grams Sunflower oil*
20 grams Safflower oil*
3 grams castor oil*
2 to 5 grams Lavender essential oil**
* for the oils, you can use a combination of other liquid oils including Olive oil. Castor oil is very thick and is a nice touch to the recipe.
** Important Note on Essential Oils:
Essential oils are very potent and should never be ingested or used on young children. It's crucial to do your own research to ensure you can tolerate them, especially if you have medical issues or are on medication that could interact with essential oils.
Best practice is to stick to 1-2% by weight for the formula. For this recipe, 2.5 grams is 1% and 5 grams is 2%. Start with 2 grams and add more slowly until the scent is strong enough for you. Do not exceed 2% (5 grams) of essential oil. In our formula, we used 2 to 2.5 grams of essential oil.
Equipment Needed:
Double boiler (can also use a big pot with some water in it, and place your big stainless steel bowl over top in order to melt the butters)
Stainless steel bowl
Silicone whisk
Silicone spatula
Handheld electric mixer
*Take care not to get any water from the double boiler into the body butter!
Instructions:
1) In a large steel bowl, melt the Shea butter and cupuacu/cocoa butter together over a double boiler.
2) Use a silicone whisk to slowly mix all the ingredients together.
3) Add the liquid oils (except the essential oils) to the melted butters and heat for an additional 5 minutes.
4) Remove from heat and add your essential oils.
5) Next, place the bowl into the fridge (or freezer) to help cool off the body butter faster. Check on it every 20-30 minutes. We are waiting for the body butter to harden a bit so that the outer edges are solidified and the center is no longer liquid.
6) Once this has been achieved, use your electric mixer to whip the body butter. Scrape the sides of the bowl down with the spatula and whip it a bit more. If it seems too soft, you can return it to the fridge to harden it up a bit, but if it is of the desired consistency at this point, you can then go ahead and scoop it Into your desired storage jars.
7) Keep in the fridge to prolong the shelf life and to prevent premature rancidity.
Enjoy your own handmade body butter! Makes a beautiful gift!
Final Notes:
I use the following companies to source these ingredients. (I am not affiliated with these companies, but I like their products as they sell in multiple quantities, are high quality and cruelty-free, source their ingredients responsibly, and are the best price in terms of cost per gram).
https://www.voyageursoapandcandle.com
Voyageur is based in BC and you can get smaller quantities from them.
https://www.newdirectionsaromatics.ca
New Directions is based in Ontario and they deal in larger bulk quantities. They have good prices too, but I think they have a minimum order amount of $100.
TKB is based in California and have a wide range of great products.
